How to turn a Chalkboard Mirror into a, uh, Chalkboard Mirror.

I bought 2 Chalkboard Mirrors from a friend and redid them so they would go better in my house.

 

For those of you who follow me on Instagram and saw this picture: 

 

 This is the resulting project:)

 

 

I have this hanging over my dresser and will be using it for {Memory Verses} and quotes. It makes me so happy to wake up to this every morning...I feel like it helps to start my day off right.

 

This is what they looked like before:

I loved the color and the metallic sheen in the paint(hard to tell here), but the chalkboard paint was flaking so I decided to redo them.

I flipped it over and saw that it was attached with screws, so I took it apart to really get it nice and clean. I sanded the frame of any rough areas and paint drips, and then tried to do the same on the chalkboard.

 

DUDE! Getting Chalkboard paint off of a mirror is no joke. I sanded, I scrubbed, I scraped and finally I used paint thinner and then scrapped some more. It was a total pain, and I blame my dad.

 

 Thank you Dad for teaching me that "If something is worth doing, it's worth doing RIGHT."
 

Boo.

I spent hours scraping Chalkboard paint so that I could have a smooth surface to
reapply CHALKBOARD PAINT.

 

Not gonna lie, it was worth it in the end. Boo again for Dad always being right;) Ha ha ha! Love you DAD!

 

 

I did a couple coats of spray paint with the leftover paint from my Garage Sale Owl on one of the frames (Rust-Oleum Satin Lagoon) and Rust-Oleum Sunburst Yellow on the other one.

 

 

The yellow one is for my daughters slow and steady room makeover.

I did a couple coats of Chalkboard Spray paint on the newly scraped mirrors and then let them dry for over 24 hours. Once they were dry it was time to "prime them",
which is just rubbing chalk all over to get the surface ready.

This was by far the worst part of the whole project.
Yes, even worse than the hours of scraping paint.
I HATE the sound of scraping chalk and I shuddered the whole time.

*Shudder*

I love the bright shiny color and how it contrasts with the Chalkboard paint.

 

And here's the one for me. I'll bet the color choice is not at all predictable to those of you who know me;) I'm kind of obsessed.

The {Georgia} Dresser

Sigh...isn't she lovely?

 

 

 

My friend Georgia and I were talking during a crafting morning and I mentioned that I was searching for a smallish dresser for my entry. I just needed something with a little more storage than the sofa table I had in there currently. Well, she had picked this little dresser up about 2 years ago to refinish and it was still sitting in her garage and since she had no home for it, she sold it to me. I may have squealed with delight when she sent me the picture...it was EXACTLY what I had in mind.

 

Don't you love when things like that happen?

Of course you do;)

Anyway, that's why its the Georgia Dresser.

I wiped her down and sanded a few spots and then got right to painting.

 

I knew I wanted a coral color and was so happy to find this at Lowes.

It's Coral Coast (aka: My happy place)

 

After painting a couple coats, I sanded around the edges and then applied Ralph Lauren Glaze in Tobacco in small sections and then wiped it off with paper towels. I glazed until I felt I had achieved
the perfect amount of "dirty".

 

 

To protect the new finish, I applied a layer of Wipe on Poly and let it dry overnight.

 

 Here's the hardware which Georgia had already spray painted (thank you) , but I like all my hardware to be the same.

Yep! Oil Rubbed Bronze.

FAVORITE!

 

I love putting everything back together and then stepping back to see how it turned out.

 

I am STUPID giddy over how perfect she is.

 

 

Seriously...I giggle every time I walk past her:)

Refinished Garage Sale Mirror

 It has been so long since I bought this mirror…just look at my flat tummy!
This was right before I got pregnant...I will be 28 weeks tomorrow
and am really missing my waistline right now.**Sigh**

Okay, back to the mirror.

I bought it at a garage sale for $5 and knew exactly what I would do with it.

I loved that it was a DIY mirror and that the glass was cut in 1980.
It has the date on the back.

I sanded it a little and primed it.
Do you like my canned food stands? Use whatcha got, right?

Then I painted it this scrumptious mustard yellow:)
The color is Solar Fusion by Behr.

…then I painted my face a little.

The yellow was a little bright,
so I busted out the RL Tobacco Glaze and dirtied up the shiny paint job.

  I found some hooks with an oil-rubbed bronze finish at Target and had the husband put them on. I could have done this myself, but I am such a freak with the measuring that I just delegated. I’m learning! ;)

This weekend we finally remembered to pick up some hardware to hang the mirror and my husband hung it up for me…not once, but twice! Yep. I have some holes to fill. The poor guy got it all hung up where I asked him too, only to look over at me making an “I hate it” face. Ha!

So then he lowered it about 9 inches and I was a happy wife!

Um, yeah…that’s another LONG overdue project that I am still working on.

It’s not that it is such a difficult project, it’s just that I can only work on it once my 2 year old goes to bed and by then I am so exhausted that I can’t do much. I am determined to get it done soon though! I am only getting bigger and more uncomfortable with the pregnancy, so it’s kinda like “now or never lady!” I’m going to have to COFFEE UP and push through the pain, but I am sure it will be worth it.

It is primed and now I just have to paint and glaze.

Dressed up a little for Christmas…I LOVE the colors together!

Added bonus: I have somewhere to hang my favorite ornaments from Restoration Hardware

that are too heavy to hang on our tree! Boom!

Favorite Posts of 2010

2010 was an amazing year of growth for me.
My word for last year was Thrive and I did just that.

I was a perfectionist who was afraid to fail and thus would not try anything new.

Well, I was able to push past all of that and I took a sewing class. I was TERRIFIED and almost cancelled a few times. Boy am I glad that I didn't! I love sewing.

I also refinished my first piece of furniture!
I think this is what I am most proud of from 2010.
