{Handmade} Princess Leia Costume

My daughter Brooklyn as Princess Leia.

Perfect character for her: girly and strong and super sassy.

 My little Leia was asked a couple times if her freckles were real.

Yep. Straight from Jesus, super real.

Her hair got so much attention at the Halloween Carnivals we went to.

People kept wondering how we got them so perfect.

For the belt I used Jess from Craftiness is not Optional's tutorial.

I just added a couple inches to make it fit my daughter and it came out perfectly!

The "hood" is not a normal hood, but is actually a rectangle of fabric with the short sides sewn into the collar. I made hers a little long, but I'm not stressing over it. She loved it.

The collar I had to free style and I am not thrilled with how it came out, but it was the best of the 4 that I tried. Yeah...4 collars that I sewed on and ripped off (gently with a seam ripper...not all Hulk-y).

I decided that I love it.

For the dress part I used the same pattern that I used last Christmas to make

Brooklyn's Mary costume: Simplicity 4797.

Brooklyn was treated like a celebrity all night and was even bowed to by a few people running booths.

I am not going to get away with store bought costumes for this girl anymore...

she loved how authentic she looked.

Poor cat.

Reversible Super Hero Capes

I made Reversible Super Hero Capes out of felt for my niece and nephews
and for my son Travis for Christmas.

I decided that instead of doing specific superheros, 

I wanted to make it more personal and do their initial on one side.

That way it's Super Caleb, Super Maddie, Super Gilbert, Super Toby and Super Travis!

 I appliqued their initial onto a black circle of felt that was made using a bowl from my kitchen and then appliqued that onto the center of the felt cape piece,
which I cut out freehand.

Here is G for Super Gilbert!

On the reverse side I used a lighting bolt that I got from The Long Thread. I appliqued this to the center of the cape, then sewed the two pieces right sides together, left an opening a few inches wide, turned it and top stitched it. 

Then I sewed velcro to the flaps and I was done!

Now the only bummer is that when a couple of the older kids(18 year old brother and 20 year old brother) saw them they asked me to make one for them! Gah! I think I am going to have to use a lighter fabric as theirs will be so much larger. I had already planned to make one for my daughter and my two youngest siblings, so I will just do it all at once.
